It's the end of another school year. Paradoxically, I consider the finish line of grading to be the worst part of the whole process. The comments and the calculations are done, yes, but after I've submitted final grades I can expect anywhere from five to twenty emails from students with a wide range of legitimate to nonsensical complaints. Some seek extra credit after the semester has ended, others have calculated their own grade and are convinced I've made a mistake (and yes, sometimes...

I decided that this should be my next post since I got into a brief conversation regarding attendance policies and was honestly surprised by the number of people insisting that attending class isn’t necessary, provided that you “learn the material” on your own (we’ll get into what that means below). Perhaps this won’t change any minds, but as an educator I feel compelled to point out some of the reasoning behind mandatory attendance policies so that there can be better transparency among teacher...

I want to talk about an almost.

We hear about them all the time. Most are just conversational junk food----that time you almost spoke to the guy who you thought might be Brad Pitt----but some almosts can be unintentionally cruel. Like when your friend just got into a car accident and you bring up how once you were almost rear-ended by a semi. It might be true, but really you're just making the conversation all about you now, reminding your friend of how you escaped unscathed while they're dealing...

Tis the season for stress and panicking. If your school is anything like mine then you're knee-deep in finals at the moment. And if you're anything like me you'd rather be playing Pocket Camp or Pokemon Go than working. (Yes, Pokemon Go still exists. Yes, I'm still invested.)

Why not have the best of both worlds though? Why not play and be productive? As an early holiday gift I present my three favorite websites for getting shit done and having fun while doing it.

If you're in school at any stage----high school, college, graduate, teacher-----you're going to be stressed and you're going to be overworked. It just comes with the territory. I've read a lot of advice on how to manage things, but most of it involves making big life changes that aren't always feasible when you're just trying to make it to Friday afternoon. So here are five super simple things you can do to make school life easier, and one thing that's just a little bit harder.

It's the start of the Fall semester. Alongside writing syllabi and trying to get Canvas to bow to my will, I've been grappling with a question that first arose in my teaching training two years ago:

What exactly are you supposed to wear?

It's a trickier question than some might expect. Professors should look professional, right? But I'm not a professor yet---just 'posing' as one for the many students who don't realize the number of classes GTAs teach---and the student half of my identity often d...
