Writing reviews, metas, and the like is a lot about timing. If you don’t craft your writing in the immediate aftermath of your source’s release, someone else will beat you to it and, chances are, your audience will be less enthused about reading the same arguments weeks later. (Admittedly, that’s up for debate. I for one am happy to read about the same shit for years on end.) Thus, when I didn’t have the time or the mental energy to write about It: Chapter Two immediately after seeing it in thea...

[Warning: spoilers ahead!]

Step One: Ditch the Heels

Does anyone remember when Claire in Jurassic World made the conscious decision to try and outrun a T-Rex in three-inch heels? Yeah. Grace would kick Clarie’s ass. If you suddenly find yourself chucked into a horrifying, life or death situation, make sure you have every advantage, starting with your wardrobe. Grace can’t do much about being stuck in her wedding gown (which, as far as gowns go, is admittedly pretty practical), but she can take th...

Like the rest of the world (or at least the rest of Neflix users) I was watching Hill House all those months ago and, also like everyone else, I have lots of thoughts about that ending.

A few weeks ago I was hanging in my shared office, waiting around for students not particularly interested in coming to office hours, and a few of the other GTAs struck up a conversation about the final episode, "Silence Lay Steadily." To my surprise they all unanimously hated it, going so far as to recommend tha...

{Beware, traveler. Spoilers for the first episode ahead!}

As an avid fan and scholar of television, I take pride in the fact that I have a solid understanding of the medium. On the whole I’d say we’re good friends. However, every once in a while a show arrives out of the blue, beats me over the head until I’m reeling, and proclaims in a loud, satisfied voice, “Lol oh honey. You thought.”

The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell is that show.

“This is our home, and it’s a place where the...

It begins when you’re walking home late at night. Or maybe you’ve been left in the house all alone. Perhaps you're with friends but you’re separated somehow—by a door, a tree-line, whatever keeps them just out of reach. And then you see it: something so horrific that it chills you to your core. It’s so grotesque, so terrifying that all you can do is scream and scramble for help. You know instinctually that’s the only way to survive.

The problem? No one believes you. Oh, and you’re a woman.

Except...

Back at it again with our nonsense. Nick returns for some truly ridiculous (yet entertaining?) discussion of our latest video game fave. Like last time, Nick's answers are in orange while mine are in purple. More serious analysis of Unknown Worlds' underwater survival game to follow. Later. Probably much later when I have some of that mythical substance known as time. Until then...

{Beware, Traveler, spoilers and some NSFW content ahead!}

1. Let’s start off with a bit of honesty: how many hours h...

{Beware, Traveler, spoilers for Bioshock: Infinite, a minor spoiler for the Preacher comic series, and violent images below}

You know the whole, “Tell me about yourself” question? The one that's just annoying to answer after coming back from your middle school summer break, but over the years grows into something important, a panic-inducing question when it affects whether you’ll get that job or land a second date? We all have a list to draw on when we need to answer it: religion, politics, heart...

On a whim I decided that this summer would be the summer of bingeing horror films. I've got a gorgeous blanket to knit and god knows I'll want something to hide my head under when things get rough, so horror it is. On another whim I decided that It Follows would be the first Netflix flick to catch up on and BOY was that an excellent choice on my part.

Which comes as no surprise to anyone who hasn't completely fallen off the horror wagon for 5+ years. (Like me. What was I thinking?)

The 2014 indie...

This show is not for the squeamish. By any stretch of the imagination.

Yeah, yeah I’m underestimating you, right? After all, 21st century media-immersed Americans are 100% desensitized. We watch people get their guts ripped out on Game of Thrones. There’s non-stop cursing on shows like The Wire. Hell, a few months back I went into The Shape of Water expecting a quirky fairy tale (which I got), but found myself enjoying a woman masturbating every morning and a guy ripping off his own fingers. It’s...

"Throwback Thursdays" are for metas, rants, reviews, and the like that have already been written elsewhere, primarily on tumblr. Due to tumblr's specific culture there's often a slight difference in the language and tone of these posts. That is, less "professional scholar" and more "exasperated fangirl." Both are useful in their own right.
