[Warning: spoilers ahead!]

Step One: Ditch the Heels

Does anyone remember when Claire in Jurassic World made the conscious decision to try and outrun a T-Rex in three-inch heels? Yeah. Grace would kick Clarie’s ass. If you suddenly find yourself chucked into a horrifying, life or death situation, make sure you have every advantage, starting with your wardrobe. Grace can’t do much about being stuck in her wedding gown (which, as far as gowns go, is admittedly pretty practical), but she can take th...

I’ve been immersed in a Doctor Who re-watch lately. Just the Nine and Ten eras. Why? Because I’ve become horribly disenchanted with Moffat’s writing over the years and “The Girl in the Fireplace” fully encompasses all my gripes and complaints. “If you’re gonna keep thinking about this,” said a tiny voice in the back of my head, sounding suspiciously devil-like, “Why not just write it all out? Speak to an actual audience instead of the imaginary one you’ve conjured up. What could go wrong?” What...

I tried to come up with a catchy title and obviously failed, though in my defense I think this conversation is important enough for the blunt and the straight forward. A little over two weeks ago Good Omens dropped on Amazon Prime to the utter joy of Gaiman and Pratchett fans alike----myself included. Given the criticism we've seen lately against live-action remakes (Aladdin), "live-action" remakes (The Lion King), long-running franchises (Star Wars), and shows with lackluster finales (Game of T...

Anyone who frequents this blog with any semi-regularity (being real generous with my popularity here) will know that I’m a big fan of iPhone games. I’m invested in dismantling the concept of a “fake gamer,” which includes acknowledging that every game need not be narratively focused, attached to a console, or—we’re being blunt here—marketed to men in order to be deemed worthwhile by the community. I’ve spoken before about how the check-in, grinding nature of most iPhone games make them perfect f...

[Beware, Traveler, spoilers for the series below]

I've finally finished the first season and I'm still not crazy about Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

I say "finally" because good god did it take me a long while. I'd been recommended the show by an enthusiastic friend ages ago (not to mention by my social media, Netflix, and an excellent Rotten Tomatoes rating), and started it in the beginning of 2018, looking for some stress relief at the start of a new semester. I went in 110% convinced that I was going t...

{Beware, traveler, spoilers for all seasons of Elementary ahead!}

In the eighth episode of the sixth season of Elementary (titled “Sand Trap”), Sherlock returns home after a few months of doctor-imposed vacation and is met with a heartfelt hug from Joan. It’s beautiful. And worth re-watching on a loop.

This alone makes their relationship noteworthy—the 19th century original stories with their social norms and the other adaptations of this supposed “high functioning sociopath” don’t come clos...

I am currently immersed in the unique hell that is securing a PhD. Past the hurdle of candidacy; ploughing straight on towards the trauma that is a dissertation. The one (small) silver lining is that I get to write about something I'm actually, truly obsessed with: fanfiction. More specifically, the Coffee Shop AU.

Teasing out this massive genre----or trope, depending on who you ask----isn't the easiest of tasks, but it sure as hell is fun. I get to trace the Coffee Shop's overt connections to th...

A few days ago I was reading the forward of Meyer's Life and Death in which she lays out some of the reasons why she chose to do a gender swapped re-imagining of Twilight. This quote in particular stood out to me:

"Bella has always gotten a lot of censure for getting rescued on multiple occasions, and people have complained about her being a typical damsel in distress. My answer to that has always been that Bella is a human in distress, a normal human being surrounded on all sides by people who...

{Beware, traveler, spoilers ahead}

Theoretically, the purpose of any blog post is to convey something. To explain to my (embarrassingly small) audience my opinions, to generate new ones in turn, and----as I always hope----to teach. I don't compose blog posts until I feel like I have something to say... until now. There's been no time to unpack and analyze the Sense8 finale. I don't have any groundbreaking reflections. I finished the movie-length episode exactly seven minutes ago and I just need...

June 6, 2018

On a whim I decided that this summer would be the summer of bingeing horror films. I've got a gorgeous blanket to knit and god knows I'll want something to hide my head under when things get rough, so horror it is. On another whim I decided that It Follows would be the first Netflix flick to catch up on and BOY was that an excellent choice on my part.

Which comes as no surprise to anyone who hasn't completely fallen off the horror wagon for 5+ years. (Like me. What was I thinking?)

The 2014 indie...
