Anyone who frequents this blog with any semi-regularity (being real generous with my popularity here) will know that I’m a big fan of iPhone games. I’m invested in dismantling the concept of a “fake gamer,” which includes acknowledging that every game need not be narratively focused, attached to a console, or—we’re being blunt here—marketed to men in order to be deemed worthwhile by the community. I’ve spoken before about how the check-in, grinding nature of most iPhone games make them perfect f...

Let’s be honest for a moment. Would I really make a short blog post solely to complain about a free iPhone game that has no actual impact on my life, just because I happen to be an A+, ridiculous, highly competitive, no-turning-back-I’m-just-like-this gamer?

Absolutely.

Because I’m serious about Harry Potter and I’m serious about the entertainment that reminds me there’s a life outside of writing a dissertation. Because the temperature is starting to drop. Because I’m tired. All of these reason...

What makes for excellent gameplay? Surely grinding isn’t at the top of the list. Who wants to spend their time doing a repetitive, meaningless, drawn-out task that in no way calls on skills or knowledge? It’s bad enough in MMOs when you at least know you’re heading towards some serious in-game advantage. Crafting an entire narrative around grinding though… that would be foolish.

Yet that’s exactly what we have in the new-ish mobile game Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery. It’s supposedly the game we...

Back at it again with our nonsense. Nick returns for some truly ridiculous (yet entertaining?) discussion of our latest video game fave. Like last time, Nick's answers are in orange while mine are in purple. More serious analysis of Unknown Worlds' underwater survival game to follow. Later. Probably much later when I have some of that mythical substance known as time. Until then...

1. Let’s start off with a bit of honesty: how many hours h...

{Beware, Traveler, spoilers for Bioshock: Infinite, a minor spoiler for the Preacher comic series, and violent images below}

You know the whole, “Tell me about yourself” question? The one that's just annoying to answer after coming back from your middle school summer break, but over the years grows into something important, a panic-inducing question when it affects whether you’ll get that job or land a second date? We all have a list to draw on when we need to answer it: religion, politics, heart...

Welcome to the unofficial and completely subjective ranking of Dream Daddy's dating options! I've wanted to do a ranking for a while now and because my own love for this game isn't embarrassing enough I decided to drag my friend Nick into the mix as guest blogger. His rankings will be in fire orange (or as close to that as Wix allows) while I went for the obviously superior plum purple. Fair warning, this ranking is more absurdity than actual advice, heavily influenced by intoxication, exha...

How many of us know how to play computer games?

It's a more complicated question than you might expect. The timeline goes something like this: a friend of mine got sick, watched TV, took up knitting, and eventually got desperate enough that she was willing to try the computer games I've been raving about for years just to stave off a bit of boredom. At the time I'd just found out that my childhood favorite The Secret of Monkey Island had been remastered, and if there's one thing my friend likes i...

I wish that I could travel back in time and tell my ten-year-old self—the one currently frustrated that Mom was playing World of Warcraft and Dad was playing Civilization and laptops didn't exist yet, so you'll just have to wait your turn at the desktop computers, sorry—that someday soon everyone would have video games tucked into their back pockets. I'm not talking about Gameboys and the 3DS though, consoles that mark you as A Gamer and can be uncomfortable to use in public past the age of sixt...

Tis the season for stress and panicking. If your school is anything like mine then you're knee-deep in finals at the moment. And if you're anything like me you'd rather be playing Pocket Camp or Pokemon Go than working. (Yes, Pokemon Go still exists. Yes, I'm still invested.)

Why not have the best of both worlds though? Why not play and be productive? As an early holiday gift I present my three favorite websites for getting shit done and having fun while doing it.

Soon after circulating my first blog post about Dream Daddy-----the one that praised its fluffy, happy-go-lucky queer narrative-----someone responded that there are actually three ways that you can die in this game.

Alrighty then.

Actually though, this is one of Dream Daddy's more fascinating features. Dying is an integral part of most games' rule system, a mechanic that isn't dependent on the fictional world. No one really questions why Mario has three lives, we just accept that this is part of...
